Advice to Parents (Part 4)

Lead in first things first. They’ve got to see it. Our kids heard us studying with others to help them in their walks with God. They made visits with us. They went to baptisms at night and so forth. They helped us buy gifts for the poor and needy. They collected items from their own to give to others less fortunate. They knew that our lives would never be centered on children’s sports. They knew they couldn’t play sports during church times. We tried to communicate in thousands of ways what was important and let them know early and often that we would always work to get our priorities straight. And, we didn’t care if the neighbor kids were playing soccer, basketball or volleyball twelve months out of the year and playing in tournaments on Sunday mornings. They were not going to. I told them I did not want them playing college or professional sports and really didn’t want them playing high school sports all that much. They did some, but they knew although we’d be at every possible game and activity, and we’d yell and cheer for them and go nuts in the stands, we knew and made sure they knew, that was just fun and games. We taught them what real life was about though and they knew our values better than they wanted some days.

Advice to Parents (Part 3)

Love and respect their other parent! You’re the one that chose them in the first place. They didn’t get a choice. Don’t you ever be disrespectful to their other parent in front of them! And, if you do, apologize profusely. Bite your tongue, turn your head, and save it for the privacy of the master bedroom closet. Kids learn to disrespect from their parents. Decide not to teach it to them, but to teach them the opposite

Advice to Parents (Part 2)

Identify, confess, and put to death your own deeply-seated sinful desires for your kids. Nothing is more disgusting than seeing parents living vicariously in the sin (and/or sports lives) of their kids! Do you get the most gratification when you see your kids putting God and the things of God first? Or, do you secretly want them to be the typical “good-Christian-kid” but take the most pride in their music, dance, sports, or academics. Or, their dating relationships, for goodness sakes?! Do you gain satisfaction seeing your little “Johnny” act arrogant? Do you look the other way when he berates the “under-performers” on the team? Do you beam most when she hits the goal or hits the high note? Do you get to the performances or games early and attend their every performance function while never or rarely attending a youth function at church and constantly being late for church? Do you volunteer for service at school events, where your child shines of course, and work tirelessly at such, but never have time to lift a finger to serve at spiritual activities for their well-being. Do you host the team dinners but can’t find the enthusiasm to host youth-group activities? They’re watching and listening, parents. And, they know what’s really important to you. So many of the immodest clothes put on little girls end up there because of mothers and fathers who like seeing them look “cute.” And, so many of the selfish, arrogant behaviors of little boys end up there because of dads who are living out their own unfulfilled dreams of being the skirt-chasing jock! And, mom’s who want their son to be the “popular” guy they always coveted when they were in school. Disgusting and shameful. Get over it, parents. Repent of all of that. Your kids will pay dearly if you don’t.

Advice to Parents (Part 1)

When I first began ministry, the preacher at the church told me to be sure and do all my sermons on child-rearing before I had any. In response to my bemused expression, he just chuckled and said after you have a teenager you won’t think you even know anything anymore. As a junior high Bible class teacher and then as the Youth Minister, I had worked with his oldest son and knew him quite well. His son was making some really bad choices and I could certainly feel his dad’s pain. This was just one more incident I had observed and/or been involved with that had caused me early on to determine to raise godly, well-adjusted kids and not make the same mistakes I’d seen others make and later regret. And further, from observing others that I deeply respected, I knew that was in no way an easy quest. I woke up in the middle of the night a couple of days ago and felt compelled to write these thoughts to parents.

If he didn't, someone pulled off the greatest hoax ever. Actually, there is more historical evidence for Jesus than for most figures of his time and before.

Are all religions equal?

No, they are not. Modern man has sought unity and peace through denial. If we can just look at the surface of many religions and sort of practice revisionist history, then we can claim that all the world religions are basically the same.

How do we know the Bible is from God?

From all accounts, nobody ever caught God in the act of writing the Bible. The Scripture simply says it was God-breathed and that holy men wrote it as God's Spirit led them.
