An Eye for an Eye, a Cheek for a Cheek  Back
by Ronnie Worsham
12/11/2007

"You have heard that it was said, ?Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you?" (Matt. 5:38-39). Jesus brought a radically different concept about dealing with the wrongs others commit against us. His followers took him seriously. The annals of history are filled with heroic stories about the selflessness of Christians and their willingness to be wronged rather than to forcefully defend themselves and/or seek retribution.

The law of Moses had provided a sort of punishment that was tit for tat (Ex. 21:22-24). Get what you give. If you put someone's eye out, you get your eye put out. The laws of this world work that way. They really have to. But the rules of the kingdom of God are different. They're reversed?the least shall be the greatest, the first the last, get by giving, find freedom in service, etc.

Jesus' way is freeing. It's easier. It works better. You don't have to play God and judge and punish. You just surrender. You think about others rather than yourself. Things that don't matter don't matter.

If someone uses you, they just use you. It's their problem, not yours. You don't have to defend, because God will defend. "Do not take revenge but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: ?It is mine to avenge; I will repay' (Deut. 32:35)" (Rom. 12:19).

"But I tell you?" Jesus says, "Do not resist an evil person" (Matt. 5:39). Jesus says, "If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also" (Matt. 5:39). Jesus says, "If someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well" (Matt. 5:40). Jesus says, "If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles" (Matt. 5:41). Jesus says, "Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you" (Matt. 5:42). Jesus says, "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven" (Matt. 5:44-45).

Jesus teaches a better way than retribution and revenge. Jesus teaches unselfish love that is in the interest of others. You take care of others, and God will take care of you! And he'll do a much better job of taking care of you anyway.
