The Day of Departure Has Arrived

Posted by Ronnie Worsham

Lord willing, Casey and I will depart for India, the second most populated country on the planet, this afternoon just after 4 p.m. We are heading to an Asian country with over 1 billion people, and which is growing by an estimated 50,000 people per day! India is a country that is rooted in one of the oldest known civilizations. Having been racked with outside colonialism and raids through the centuries, India achieved complete independence in 1947 through the nonviolent resistance movement of Ghandi and Nehru. About 65% of the population is still dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods and about 75% live in villages or rural areas. Curiously, it is said that about 40% of the population live a significant distance from a road. About 80% of the population is Hindu, 14% Muslim, and only 2.3% Christian. Only about 32% of Indian homes possess a television. About 25% of the world’s poor live in India. Hindi is the national language but there are 14 other official languages. English is widely used as a second language.

Needless to say, our eyes will be widened and our heads will be full of all the things we will see and hear in this historic and unique country. We are honored that Pastor Sugumar has invited us there and that the country has graciously allowed us to come and visit. The United States is home to many who have moved here from India and is host to many more who visit here each year. Similarly, India welcomes many from America annually. Many American businesses operate in India due to the ample workforce and competitive salary structure.

Our first few days will be spent in and around Chennai, formerly Madras, the fourth largest city of India. We will spend our days there with Pastor Sugumar meeting the church he leads, the special children we have heard about and seen pictures of that come to his home each day, and learning about the area of India in which he and his family minister. We will also be with him one of the days hosting many of the 50 or so pastors from villages outside of Chennai and down the coast of southeast India. We will also visit a few villages down the coast to gain a firsthand knowledge of life in rural India.

So, this morning I am finishing up things around the office and taking care of various details that need attended to while I am gone for the next eight days. After a summer filled with travel, I have put off packing until the last moment, so that will have to be finally tackled. Casey and I covet your constant prayers, yes, for our safety and well-being, but most of all for the lives and ministries we will be visiting and trying to touch while we are there. This trip is not about us. It is about our friend, Sugumar, and all his friends—the Lord’s friends there—who have been called to be the mouths and hands and feet of Him that we all adore and serve. Our only goal is to see where He is working and where and how He wants us to join Him in His work.

I have been tracking your trip. I though of you guys when you were over New York, the Atlantic, in Germany, especially over Afghanistan and now you have been there for a little over 12 hours! In India! So it's nine over there now and you must have just finished a yummy Indian meal :) How are your stomachs holding up after a few Indian meals? What has struck you the most so far? About how much English can you actually decipher :)? I love you guys dearly and am thrilled at the thought of wha

I'm so excited that you get to go and bless all those people. I hope the gifts we have put together as a church family can greatly honor those whom the world won't honor much at all. As Paul said, Honor one another above yourselves, and you get to live that out for Northeast. I'm also looking forward to hearing about the funny things that happen along the way, all the humorous observations of an American in a foreign land. God bless you both and never doubt that you are in our prayers!

Ronnie and Casey,

Please know that you are in my prayers daily. I pray that the Lord will use you both as vessels of His good will and His works as lives are changed in India.

I pray that you both will experience an increase of faith and devotion to Him as a result of these changes too.

I also pray for your safety and for a time where both of you can grow together even more as His servants.

I love both of you and look forward to hearing more from you soon!
