On Sin and Our Country, Part II

Posted by Ronnie Worsham

And, too many of our politicians, public administrators, and even our public school leaders seem to be slavishly lining up to patronize wicked behavior and rein in the atrocious behaviors of us closed-minded Christians who just happen to represent the views of the founding fathers and the majority of our populace. In too many cases, the young Satan worshipers are protected and coddled, the young atheists are nurtured and cared for, and the young homosexual club is encouraged in their social expression. However, the young Christians are battled and banned and must be kept in check. But, hey, let’s just appoint leaders to reinterpret the whole underpinning of the Constitution through judicial legislating as is currently being done.

Well, those that know me know I am not into politics. Polity is fine and necessary in a fallen world, but lying, cheating, and self-serving policies and practices are endemic to our politics now. Those that know me also know that I try to speak the truth. I am an “equal opportunity offender” when it comes to what I believe the truth to be. I think Jesus was that way—“I am the truth”, he said. Read his way of addressing the hypocritical Pharisees recorded in Matthew 23. But today, if we just happen to not agree with some particular minority, minority social view, or other fringe social element because of our spiritual convictions, we’re hunted down and verbally assassinated, if not worse. It’s open season on white Christians today. I’ve spent my life trying to stamp out racism and gender discrimination, and even have even practiced my own version of "Christian affirmative action" for minority segments. Yet, as a white male Christian, I have to be constantly subjected to the most derogatory, hate-inspiring and insulting portrayals of my own “kind”, and with the hearty approval of Hollywood and the press and talk shows and often even one of our political parties. Heck, go to the movie and most people there will think such depictions are funny. If the same thing were done to blacks or Jews or Muslims or homosexuals or women, there would be huge screams of outrage.  But, not for white Christian males. And, top of that Christians are often depicted as the most ignorant, narrow-minded characters possible.  We don’t matter anymore. We’ve had our turn. But, if anyone speaks up at all and suggests there’s reverse discrimination going on, or there’s hate being fomented toward Christians, then they are met with an astounding roar of public disapproval. Even Christians often line up to show their political correctness in condemning otherwise views and behaviors commanded and exemplified by Christ.

If one suggests that God just might have allowed evil to come on us at the World Trade Center disaster, just as we read happening throughout the Old Testament, that person has committed a heinous crime and must be shouted down as a hate-monger. If one suggests that just maybe New Orleans might have been disciplined by the floods for their legacy of gross immorality and even occult religious practices, wholly condemned by our Holy Book, then that person will practically be accused of a hate-crime. And then further, when one suggests it wasn’t such a good idea for New Orleans to flaunt the previously-committed gross behaviors by celebrating their “come-back” with a Mardi Gras parade that generally is gross and offensive to my and many other Christian’s ways of thinking, that person will be condemned as closed-minded, judgmental and hateful. Just disregard that any of us are simply seeing the others’ behaviors in light of our Holy Book. We just need to be “accepting and inclusive”, we’re told, while all the while being excluded from the supposed "society of the sane and just."

I certainly don’t agree with or support a lot of what other Christians may say or do as I’m sure they don’t with me. There are things I hear done, i.e. blowing up abortion clinics and killing abortion practitioners, that I find Biblically repugnant. Many Christians have brought much deserved criticism and even social condemnation on all our heads. I suppose we’re all guilty at some point. Some have even purported themselves to be the spokespersons for some “moral majority.” Well, I was often not in their philosophical camp, and I certainly don’t agree they spoke for the “majority” much of the time. I, and many others I know, in no way support much of that. But, the misbehaviors or questionable views and actions of a few must not be construed to be the views of the whole. Stereotyping and generalizing are never fair ways to judge others, right, civil/social-rights advocates?

Well, I must say that I’m not sorry for speaking up for Jesus Christ and his church. I’m not sorry when I speak what I believe to be the truth when I believe it is for a just cause. Because what has and is happening is, in my opinion, a clear demonstration of the psalmist’s statement: “The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men”. The wicked are strutting about freely and what is vile is now being honored among men. And, sadly, many times we Christians are on board with it in our own admirations.

There’s quote I heard years ago and just now don’t remember who said it: “Evil flourishes when good men do nothing.” Well, now is not a time for the faint—for doing nothing. The wicked freely strut about because what is vile is being honored among men in our country and other countries. Even Christians pay homage to and spend lots of money on actors, performers and athletes that flaunt wicked behavior while the same are hard-pressed to name one spiritual hero. We’ve got to stop honoring vile behavior and those that engage in it. We got to stop quietly and/or secretly admiring evil people. We’ve got to stop letting coworkers, institutions and social systems simply bowl us over toward wicked ways of thinking and acting. We’ve got to stand up for what is right, but without doing it in a self-righteous, arrogant way. We “must walk as Jesus did.” And lastly, we must, “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.  For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret” (Eph. 5:11-12).

The reality is that the Lord doesn’t like wicked people strutting about freely when vile behavior is being honored. Our country will have more calamity and judgment than we’ve seen heretofore unless humble repentance comes. The reality is, we’ll stop it or He’ll stop it. And, it’ll be a lot better for us if we stop it.
